The Centre for Ayurbiology
focuses on bridging traditional ayurvedic wisdom with contemporary biomedical
science to advance health, wellness, and translational therapeutics.
The Centre for Ayurbiology is
a multidisciplinary research initiative committed to advancing health and
well-being by integrating the classical wisdom of Ayurveda with modern
scientific innovation. The Centre focuses on unlocking the therapeutic
potential of Ayurvedic formulations and diverse plant-based products through
rigorous scientific validation, quality assessment, and safety evaluation. By
applying modern analytical, molecular, and computational approaches, the Centre
seeks to establish robust mechanistic insights, safety profiles, and quality
benchmarks for Ayurvedic medicines. The Centre provides comprehensive quality
analysis of Ayurvedic formulations using advanced instrumentation techniques,
including liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC–MS) for the
identification and characterization of active principles. Detailed toxicity
evaluation and safety assessment of Ayurvedic formulations form a key component
of our research, ensuring their reliability, efficacy, and translational
relevance. A major focus of the Centre is the systematic identification and
profiling of bioactive compounds present in Ayurvedic formulations and raw
herbal materials. In parallel, we are developing a comprehensive, curated
database linking Ayurvedic formulations, medicinal plants, and their active
principles, including detailed chemical information such as two-dimensional
molecular structures. This resource aims to support research, innovation, and
drug discovery efforts rooted in Ayurvedic knowledge.
The Centre for Ayurbiology is
structured around key thrust areas that emphasize the scientific validation,
mechanistic understanding, and translational potential of Ayurvedic knowledge
using modern biomedical approaches. A major thrust of the Centre is the
evaluation of polyherbal and classical Ayurvedic formulations as multi-target
therapeutics for complex chronic and neurodegenerative disorders such as
Alzheimer’s disease, with particular emphasis on Medhya Rasayana formulations
and their effects on cognition, neuroprotection, immunity, and brain health
through integrated experimental and computational strategies. Another core
thrust area focuses on addressing antimicrobial resistance by assessing the
synergistic potential of Ayurvedic formulations in combination with
conventional antibiotics to combat multi-drug resistant bacterial infections,
aiming to enhance therapeutic efficacy while reducing antibiotic burden and
resistance development. The Centre also places strong emphasis on Ayurgenomics
and personalized medicine, with dedicated research on elucidating the
phenotypic and genotypic basis of Ayurvedic Prakriti through systematic
clinical phenotyping, biochemical profiling, and high-throughput genomic
approaches such as whole-exome sequencing to establish robust
phenotype–genotype correlations. Collectively, these thrust areas are supported
by advanced analytical techniques, molecular biology, computational biology,
and biostatistics, enabling the Centre for Ayurbiology to bridge traditional
Ayurvedic principles with contemporary biomedical science and contribute to
evidence-based, personalized, and globally relevant healthcare solutions.
