Dr. Varghese P R

Dr. P. R. Varghese, M.Sc., Ph.D., is a senior academician, epidemiologist, and research administrator with over four decades of experience in teaching, research, and institutional research development. Since 2014, following his retirement as Associate Professor and Head, PG Department of Zoology, St. Aloysius College (University of Calicut), he has been serving as Research Coordinator and Scientist F at the Jubilee Centre for Medical Research (JCMR), where he leads the Research Administration and Facilitation Team (RAFT).

As the head of RAFT, Dr. Varghese has played a pivotal role in establishing and strengthening Jubilee’s structured research ecosystem. Under his leadership, RAFT has evolved into a single-window facilitation system supporting undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral, faculty-driven research, and clinical studies. He has been instrumental in streamlining ethical and regulatory approvals, research committee processes, grant administration, financial monitoring, and progress reporting across departments and institutions under the Jubilee Mission Hospital Trust.

Since 2014, Dr. Varghese has actively driven research capacity building, mentoring faculty and students in research methodology, epidemiology, biostatistics, scientific writing, and publication ethics. He has guided postgraduate dissertations, doctoral research, and externally funded projects, while also coordinating national and international collaborations, execution of MoUs, and shared research infrastructure utilization. His leadership has significantly enhanced grant submissions, interdisciplinary research output, and compliance with national regulatory and ethical standards.

Dr. Varghese brings with him a distinguished academic legacy, with over 60 peer-reviewed publicationsmore than a dozen funded research projects from agencies including UGC, DST, ICMR, KSCSTE, DBT, SERB, and extensive experience as an editor, reviewer, PhD examiner, and conference organizer. His research contributions span epidemiology, genetics, dermatoglyphics, occupational health, and public health, and he is the author of the book An Introduction to Epidemiology. His recognitions include the Young Scientist Award (ISCA -DST) received from the Prime Minister of India and Fellowship of the American Dermatoglyphics Association.

Through his investigator-centric and mentorship-driven approach, Dr. P. R. Varghese continues to anchor RAFT as a strategic enabler of ethical, impactful, and sustainable research, reinforcing the research mission and national visibility of the Jubilee Centre for Medical Research.
